Scholarships

Each 90-day semester, I offer one NEEDS-BASED scholarship for a weekly 30 minute lesson.

Tuition is on a sliding scale from $35-75, payable week-by-week. I don’t need to see a bank statement—this is an honor system. Also, there are some stipulations:

1) The candidate must demonstrate a certain level of musical aptitude, enthusiasm, and commitment. The metrics for these qualities will be based solely on my observations during a first trial lesson at no cost, following an initial phone consultation.

2) The student agrees to show up on time to all scheduled sessions with all lesson materials needed for that week.

3) The student agrees to practice at least 5-6 days per week for however many hours per day is necessary to accomplish the musical goals for that week. In general, this will require a minimum of 1 to 3 hours per day. Additionally, the student must have access to a full-size weighted keyboard on which to practice. This needn’t be a Steinway Grand, but it must have a weighted, velocity sensitive action. If one is not available in the home, there are numerous community resources to explore.

4) The student will keep a daily practice journal noting pages or sections, exercises, and other subject matter assigned that week. This record will include the amount of time spent on each item practiced, with notes regarding questions or challenges arising during their practice. This helps the student keep track of their practice goals and enjoy the satisfaction of their progress. It further assists me in monitoring their progress and in making adjustments as needed to assure continued progress.

Caveat: This scholarship, as with all of my teaching, is for those with a serious interest in learning and developing this art form called “jazz.” If the student fails to keep these simple agreements, the scholarship will be terminated and awarded to another candidate.

Payment for lessons is on a week-to-week basis.
